BUILDING A RED OAK DESK This oak tree was recently dead and needed to be taken downBecause it was standing dead, it is essentially green woodThese oak planks were in the kiln at 130 degrees for approximately 12 weeksThe seasoned boards are selected and paired.The planks are planed and sanded as necessary.Dominos are inserted at 6 inch intervals.Clamps are applied to evenly join the sections.Glue is appliedThe clamps are secured and additional bracing is addedThese supports will give a perfectly flat surfaceA router is used for the corner seamThis will ensure a perfect jointBoth sides are matched for a flush fitThe pieces are trimmed where necessaryThe sections are now ready to be joined6 inch intervals for the domino holes are markedThe opposing holes are routeredThe domino system is unparalleled for this kind of workWe are now ready to insert the pegs and glueThe pegs are incredibly hard and virtually impossible to breakThe glue is evenly appliedProperly glued and secured this seam will be indestructibleClamps are used to gently join the planksEven pressure is applied as requiredAdditional bracing and clamps are addedWe now set it to dryThe finished built in is now ready to sealThe initial sealer coat is approximately 1/16th InchA light sanding and a second coat, and we have a glass like finishThe desk is now ready to installIt’s a perfect fitOak trim is added to finish the installationThe new desk is ready to usePower strips have been installed underneath with cable holes at the corner and mid pointsThe glass like finish is practically impervious to scratches and scarringMinimal maintenance will keep the desktop like new
