Our Sustainability Practices: Crafting with Care from Forest to Finish

At Mountain Dog Millworks, sustainability isn’t a marketing buzzword — it’s our foundation. From the trees we harvest to the tables we build, every step of our process is rooted in environmental responsibility and long-term forest stewardship.

Sustainably Harvested Timber from Our Mountain Estate

All of our wood comes directly from our private mountain estate in Tehachapi, California. We never outsource or buy timber from unknown sources. Instead, we carefully select and harvest trees that are either deadfall, storm-damaged, or removed as part of a long-term forest health plan. This allows us to:

  • Protect old-growth trees and native habitats
  • Reduce fire risk through strategic thinning
  • Preserve the natural beauty of our surrounding landscape

By managing the forest ourselves, we ensure every log has a traceable, responsible origin.

On-Site Milling for Maximum Efficiency

Once the trees are harvested, we mill the logs on-site. This minimizes transport emissions and gives us complete control over the size, shape, and quality of every slab. Nothing goes to waste — offcuts are repurposed into smaller products like charcuterie boards or donated as firewood to local families.

Kiln-Dried the Right Way

Air-drying wood takes time — and too much moisture can ruin a slab’s integrity. That’s why we kiln-dry all our wood in-house using low-energy methods powered in part by solar energy. Our kilns reduce the wood’s moisture content to 6–12%, making it stable, durable, and ready for long-lasting use.

Eco-Friendly Finishes

Our finishes are chosen for their performance and planet-friendliness. Whether it’s natural oils, water-based polyurethanes, or food-safe resins, we prioritize low-VOC and non-toxic options that are safe for your family — and ours.

Built to Last, Not to Landfill

Every piece we create is handmade to order. We don’t mass-produce or overstock. That means less waste, fewer returns, and more meaningful craftsmanship. Our furniture is designed to last for generations, not just seasons — reducing the need for fast furniture and disposable home goods.

Why It Matters

Responsible woodworking means looking beyond profit. It means honoring the land that provides our materials, and treating every creation as a reflection of that respect. At Mountain Dog Millworks, sustainability isn’t just part of the process — it is the process.
