Understanding Board Feet: A Simple Guide for Woodworkers and DIYers
When you’re planning a custom furniture build, shelving project, or placing a lumber order at Mountain Dog Millworks, it’s important to know how much wood you actually need. That’s where board feet come in.
In this blog post, we’ll break down what a board foot is and show you how to calculate it—no math degree required.
What is a Board Foot?
A board foot is a standard unit of measure for lumber volume in the woodworking world.
1 board foot =
12 inches (long) × 12 inches (wide) × 1 inch (thick)
This helps buyers and millworks alike calculate how much wood is needed—and how much it costs.
How to Calculate Board Feet (Step-by-Step)
Here’s the easy formula to determine board feet:
Board Feet = (Thickness × Width × Length) ÷ 144
All measurements should be in inches. Divide by 144 because that’s how many cubic inches are in one board foot (12″ × 12″ × 1″).
✅ Step 1: Measure Your Lumber
You’ll need three measurements:
- Thickness (T) – how thick the board is, in inches
- Width (W) – how wide the board is, in inches
- Length (L) – how long the board is, in inches
✅ Step 2: Plug It Into the Formula
Example:
Let’s say you’re working with a board that’s:
- 2 inches thick
- 8 inches wide
- 72 inches long
Now calculate:
(2 × 8 × 72) ÷ 144 = 8 board feet
So that board contains 8 board feet of material.
