Self-Certified Salvaged Wood Statement

Responsibly Harvested. Locally Milled. Authentically Tehachapi.

At Mountain Dog Millworks, we operate under our own rigorous environmental standard: Self-Certified Salvaged Wood™. This declaration reflects our commitment to forest stewardship, full transparency, and minimal ecological impact—rooted in honesty, not labels.

🌿 What “Self-Certified Salvaged Wood™” Means

We define salvaged wood as timber that is:

✅ Naturally fallen (deadfall)
✅ Storm-damaged or wind-felled
✅ Selectively thinned to promote forest health and fire safety
✅ Harvested by hand from our private, sustainably managed mountain estate in Tehachapi, California

We never clear-cut. We never import lumber. And we never use wood that we cannot fully trace.

📍 Where Our Wood Comes From

Every tree we mill is sourced from our own land in the Tehachapi foothills. No unknown origins. No wholesale timber. Our wood was once part of the landscape we walk every day—harvested with care, milled with respect, and transformed by hand in our family-run workshop.

Each piece has a story. Often, we can tell you the tree, the hillside, and the season it came from.

🔥 Our Drying Process

After milling, our slabs are kiln-dried on site using conventional methods. We carefully control moisture levels to ensure stable, high-quality slabs—while continuing to minimize waste and reduce our environmental footprint wherever possible.

We may not use solar kilns, but our approach to drying is just as thoughtful and quality-focused.

🔍 Our Promise of Transparency

While we are not affiliated with FSC® or PEFC™, our Self-Certified Salvaged Wood™ Code holds us to high internal standards. We commit to:

  • Full disclosure of where, how, and why each tree was harvested
  • Offering clear, traceable history for each slab or product
  • Prioritizing forest health over volume or profit

This is more than a statement—it’s a philosophy.

🐾 Certified by Conscience

Led by Master Carpenter Logan Hensley (with help from our vigilant huskies, Ghost and Koda), Mountain Dog Millworks operates with a deep respect for the land. Every tree is used purposefully, and every product is crafted with integrity—from stump to slab.
